Texas has a lower than national average cost of living, with no personal, state, nor corporate state income taxes. And five Texas cities — College Station, Richardson, McAllen, Plano and Round Rock — were on Business Insider’s list of top 33 safest U.S. cities.

It has great sports, with teams like the Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, San Antonio Spurs, Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks, Texas Rangers, and Houston Astros, as well as the largest rodeo in the world at the Houston Livestock Show.

There are more than 200 colleges and universities to help you improve your mind, and there’s always the Six Flags Over Texas amusement park to help you lose it.

Texas has enormous canyons. Big Bend National Park has wilderness, desert, and 240 miles of hiking trails. In the panhandle, Palo Duro Canyon (the second-largest canyon in the U.S.) features hoodoos and its “Texas” outdoor musical on summer evenings.

Just minutes away is the beautiful Texas Hill Country, full of charming towns where you can shop or experience farmers markets boasting fresh, locally grown peaches, pecans, and strawberries — not to mention over 40 unique wineries offering plenty of opportunities to meet friendly Texans. Living in a community of people who share interests and have time for adventure, Independence Village gives a life free of maintenance concerns, housekeeping chores, and yard work. There’s a destination for everyone in San Antonio, famous for its festive Riverwalk, the Alamo, Sea World, and the San Marcos Outlet Mall.

Deep in the heart of Texas is its Hill Country. In picturesque Fredericksburg, home of world-famous bluebonnets, you can visit the National Museum of the Pacific War, where you can see one of the Japanese midget submarines that attacked Pearl Harbor.

Only in Texas is the Commemorative Air Force Museum in Dallas, the world’s largest flying museum, where you can watch people lovingly restore vintage aircraft.
