Mission

The mission of the San Diego Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) is to provide useful assistance to, and protect the interests of, Service Members and their dependents or survivors. We promote the aims and objectives of the national MOAA organization and actively support the California Council of Chapters (CALMOAA) in efforts to further a legislative agenda appropriate to military members, veterans and their survivors. The chapter also encourages and facilitates camaraderie among its members. (We have fun!)

Information on Joining the Chapter

Membership in the chapter is open to anyone who holds, or has ever held, a commission or warrant in any component of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Public Health Service, Space Force, or National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and their surviving spouses. Membership in the national MOAA organization is not a prerequisite for membership in MOAA San Diego Chapter. Dues are waived for your first year of membership in our chapter. Annual dues for subsequent years are $20, or $50 for three years, $10/$25 for surviving spouses. The chapter also invites spouses of active members to join as Associate Members ($10/$25) with full voting rights. Membership applications may be obtained from the Member Chair, BG Dean J. Mallires, 630-327-6474, bgmallires@gmail.com, or Sustaining Membership Chair, Jerry Davenport, 619-277-5113, jaradav@cox.net, or you may attend one of our luncheons (see CHAPTER ACTIVITIES below) and join at that time.

Chapter Activities

The MOAA San Diego Chapter meets bi-monthly and features a guest speaker on a topic relevant to the local community. The Chapter supports local JROTC and ROTC programs and provides two scholarships each year to ROTC students from the San Diego area. Luncheon meetings are held on alternate months at Admiral Baker Golf Course, 2400 Admiral Baker Road, San Diego 92124. The golf course is conveniently located off I-15 and I-8 and no ID is required for entry. If you would like to join us for a luncheon meeting send your email address to either Col Jerry Davenport, jaradav@cox.net or Col Merv Avants, mavants@gmail.com, and indicate that you would like to be added to the chapter's email/luncheon list. You will then receive invitations to all upcoming luncheons. Every invitation includes details on how to register and how to pay. (You may pay by check or via the Zelle app.) Please let us know if this will be your first luncheon so that we are prepared to meet you at the door and introduce you to our members.

Legislative Issues

We promote the aims and objectives of the National MOAA organization and actively support the California Council of Chapters (CALMOAA) in efforts to further a legislative agenda appropriate to military members, veterans and their survivors.

General Information

As indicated above, San Diego Chapter of MOAA luncheons normally meet on the first Thursday of alternate months at  Admiral Baker Golf Course beginning at 11:15 AM with the meeting called to order at 11:30. Admiral Baker Golf Course is easy to reach using either I-15 or I-8. No military or government ID is required for entry. Parking is ample and free. If you are joining us for the first time include a note with your reservation check or in the Zelle memo, or let us know when you check in, or email or call any officer listed above in advance of the luncheon, so that we recognize you as a new member and can introduce you to other members present. Or, just come on in and introduce yourself! Dress is casual. We look forward to seeing you at our next luncheon!

About Our Chapter

The San Diego Chapter was chartered in 1954 and is proud to hold the distinction of being the first affiliated MOAA chapter in the United States. 2024 marks our 70th year! The chapter is one of seven MOAA chapters located in San Diego County, serving the City of San Diego and the central coastal area of the county. Our bi-monthly luncheon meetings are held in conjunction with our sister MOAA Miramar Chapter on the first Thursday of alternate months and you are invited to join us even if you are not yet a member of our chapter. Also, it is not necessary to be a member of the national MOAA organization to be a member of the MOAA San Diego Chapter. Instructions on how to sign up for the monthly luncheon are provided in each luncheon invitation email. To be added to the chapter's email and luncheon invitation lists forward your email address to either Col Jerry Davenport at jaradav@cox.net or Col Merv Avants at mavants@gmail.com. Instructions are included again in CHAPTER ACTIVITIES on the left. The chapter emails regular announcements regarding activities to members and other interested individuals. MOAA San Diego Chapter currently has about 100 members made up of currently serving, former, and retired officers and their survivors.
