The mission of the Greater Birmingham Chapter is to benefit the members of the uniformed services, their families and survivors and to advocate for a strong national defense, while providing needed support to the community and its members.

Membership in the Greater Birmingham Chapter is open to anyone who holds or has ever held a commission or warrant in any component of the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Public Health Service or National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The surviving spouses of these individuals are encourged to affiliate with the Chapter and participate as if they were members. The Greater Birmingham Chapter holds 12 meetings a year featuring guest speakers on topics relevant to the members. A special Christmas Dinner is held each December to coincide with our annual TOYS-FOR-TOTS program and Class A Uniform Inspection. In addition the chapter supports 12 local JROTC programs and 2 ROTC programs and the annual National Veterans’ Day in Birmingham observance. Recently the chapter has supported the Blue Star Salute Foundation, Wreaths Across America, Three Hots and A Cot, TOYS-FOR-TOTS, The Alabama Veterans Memorial Park and the VA National Cemetery in Montevallo, AL.

The Greater Birmingham Chapter supports the MOAA national legislative agenda and annually our Congressional Representative and Senators are invited to speak to the chapter. The chapter is also active in supporting the Alabama Council of MOAA Chapters in various state veterans' issues.

The Greater Birmingham Chapter dinner meetings are held on the first Thursday in January, February, March, April, May, September, October,November and December at Danberry at Inverness in Birmingham. The dinner meetings begin at 6:00 pm with a social hour, and adjourn by 9:00 pm. During the summer season of June, July and August informal luncheons are held at Danberry at Inverness. This is to accommodate those who don’t travel at night and make allowances for those who spend the summer traveling. In December the chapter holds Christmas Dinner, an annual TOYS-FOR-TOTS drive and Class A Uniform Inspection. The December event is held at Danberry at Inverness.

The Greater Birmingham Chapter was chartered in 1976 and serves the city of Birmingham and the surrounding areas in Jefferson, Shelby, St Clair, Chilton, Walker and Coosa counties. Meetings are held monthly at Danberry at Inverness, 234 Inverness Center Drive, Birmingam, AL 35242, phone 205-443-9500. The chapter publishes a monthly newsletter, The Greater Birmingham Chapter, Military Officers Association of America News. The chapter currently has 131 members made up of currently serving, former, and retired officers. There is another 28 survivors of these officers affiliated with the Chapter.
