The mission of the Chapter is to promote the purposes and objectives of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA); foster relations among retired, active and former officers of the uniformed services and their National Guard or Reserve components; advance the rights and interests of active duty, retired, Reserve and National Guard personnel of the uniformed services, their families and their survivors; provide useful services for members and their families; and serve the community and the Nation. The Chapter has monthly social activities including luncheons, a more formal dinner in June, and an annual picnic at a farm in the middle of Virginia’s picturesque horse country.

Membership in the Central Virginia Chapter is open to active duty, retired, National Guard, Reserve, former commissioned officers, and warrant officers of the uniformed services - Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Public Health Service, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Auxiliary membership is also available for surviving spouses of deceased officers. Eligible officers are invited to join us by contacting Membership Chairman Rich DeMong (email: DeMong@outlook.com). Regular members’ dues are $25.00 annually and are waived for the first year. Dues for Auxiliary Members are $15.00 annually.

In addition to the activities mentioned in “About our Chapter,” the Central Virginia Chapter holds monthly luncheon meetings at the Glenmore Country Club on the fourth Thursday of each month, October through May (except November when Veterans Day is observed with a special function). At each luncheon the Chapter hosts a prominent guest speaker. Recent speakers included our 5th District Congressional Representative, the Commander of the Judge Advocate General School and Legal Center, and the former inspector general of the CIA. In September, the membership enjoys a picnic at the beautiful farm of one our Chapter members located in the heart of Virginia’s scenic horse country. Each June the Chapter celebrates its founding with a more formal dinner at the Glenmore Country Club. The Central Virginia Chapter maintains a close and continuing relationship with local representatives to the Virginia General Assembly and with our 5th District United States Congressman. The Chapter joins with other Virginia MOAA Chapters annually to meet with state senators and delegates in their Richmond offices to present and solicit support for key veterans-related legislation. The Chapter also participates in the Virginia Council of Chapters congressional appreciation lunch held in Washington, D.C. each spring. A member of the Chapter’s Legislative Committee researched and prepared an extensive study of Veterans Administration documenting problems affecting its service to veterans. Our close relationship with 5th District Congressman Robert Hurt resulted in his introducing a bi-partisan bill to require an independent audit of the Veterans Administration (H.R. 3122 -- The Veterans Administration Legislative and Objective Review - VALOR - Act). In his press release announcing the legislation, Rep Hurt specifically cited the Chapter's Legislative Director, Vic Pena.

The Chapter is led by a 12-member Board of Directors which is elected each year at our December Holiday Luncheon and Annual Meeting. Board meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month (except July). As one of 18 Virginia chapters, the Central Virginia Chapter participates in quarterly meetings and other activities of the Virginia Council of Chapters (VCOC). The Chapter’s newsletter, The Bugle, is published nine times annually and provides timely and comprehensive coverage of Chapter activities and matters of interest to Chapter members.

The Central Virginia Chapter, a recipient of MOAA’s 2014 5-Star Level of Excellence award, was established in June 1971. It currently has about 200 members including approximately 25 Auxiliary Members. The Chapter’s geographical area encompasses the Charlottesville – Albemarle County region, with some members residing in Green, Nelson and other nearby counties. The Chapter presents MOAA awards at Junior ROTC ceremonies at a local high school, and works closely with the Army, Navy and Air Force ROTC units at the University of Virginia. It participates in local patriotic observances such as Memorial Day, Veterans Day and the annual rededication of Charlottesville’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The Chapter participates actively in advocating state and national veterans-related legislation, and serves on the Virginia Wounded Warrior Program Region 1 Advisory Board.
