Your elevator speech, also commonly known as your 30-second commercial, creates an interest in you and your value. It’s a quick professional summary designed to establish and maintain a listener’s attention … and get them thinking about what you can do for them or for someone they know.
In less than the time it takes to ride from the lobby to the penthouse, you’ll articulate what makes you unique, what skills make you valuable, and your overarching goal — what you plan to do professionally.
Some key things to consider when creating your 30-second commercial:
- Start Strong. Give your name and begin with a pleasantry like, “It’s nice to meet you!” before describing your goal and your unique value-added skills. Engage with a question, which demonstrates mutual interest.
- One Size Doesn’t Fit All. Define your message, and then tailor it for each target audience.
- What’s in It for Them? Don’t dwell on what you’ve done – instead, explain what you offer to their organization, and why they should want to get to know you better.
- Do Your Homework. Research the position, company, and/or industry and match your expertise to their job need.
- Practice Makes Perfect. Get intensely familiar with your pitch. It’s important to come off natural, yet compelling.
Remember, a 30-second commercial isn’t just for active job-seekers: A successful elevator speech quickly and succinctly highlights your experience and qualifications, leaving a good first impression on anyone, not just hiring managers or recruiters.
