As we enter an uncertain future that limits in-person communication, it is going to become even more critical for you to employ an effective digital presence in your job search.
Whether it be LinkedIn, Facebook or Twitter, job-seekers must have a digital persona online that can be seen readily by a perspective employer and their teams of recruiters and talent acquisition professionals.

As you are building your brand image, here are three things which should be incorporated into every LinkedIn profile:
1. Professional-Looking Picture
According to experts, LinkedIn profiles with a photo get over 20 times more views and up to 35 times more messages. And, for you transitioning servicemembers, nothing screams more to a recruiter that you are either not available or not ready for your civilian transition then when they see your high and tight haircut in that Class A or service dress uniform.
Please make sure your photo is in professional civilian attire and is appropriate for the industry or sector you are seeking.
2. Headline: Skill | Skill | Skill
Think of your headline as being who you are, not what you did. With that said, there a million “transitioning servicemember” or “veterans seeking employment” headlines out there on LinkedIn today, so keep the focus on the unique skills and attributes you can offer to make your profile stand out.
3. Summary or "About" Statement
Think of this as your opportunity to market yourself as an individual by providing a quick summary of your skills and qualifications. Similar to the 30-second elevator pitch you use to introduce yourself at networking events to get the conversation flowing, a good summary grabs the recruiter’s attention and gives them just enough information to want them to explore more of your profile and then make the connection request.

As a reminder, when creating your social media image, MOAA’s team of career transition consultants recommends remaining cognizant and staying vigilant to protect your personal and professional reputation. Before posting a picture, liking an article or sharing a comment, ask yourself, “Would I want a current or potential employer to see this?” If the answer is no, step away from the keyboard!
